2010 has been an unforgettable year for Nigerian striker Emueje Oghiabehva, but the year ended on a sour note as FC Rossiyanka went out of the UEFA Champions League in the Round of 16 at the hands of Lyon.
The French champions were deserving winners after convincing wins in both the home and the away legs of the tie. Emueje was the scorer of the only goal for FC Rossiyanka, but that would not be a consolation in what must have been a disappiointing end to the UEFA Champions League campaign.
Despite this 2010 has been Emueje’s most successful year of her career so far. FC Rossiyanka achieved a memorable double winning both the Russian Premier League title and the Russian FA Cup. Apart from these team honours, Emueje’s outstanding abilities were once again recognized. She became the League’s top goalscorer for the second time in three seasons with 23 goals from 20 games. For a third year in a row she has been voted as the League’s Best Striker.
On the international scene, the 20-year-old striker was called up to the Nigerian National Team for the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations which Nigeria won and as a result booked its place in the 2011 Women’s World Cup which will be held in Germany. Emueje had to miss the Final due to a club versus country dispute which at the end meant that Emueje stayed with FC Rossiyanka for the team’s Champions’ League and FA Cup games.
What will 2011 bring for one of the world’s best young football players?
